So lately I've been caught up in the rush of wedding season & have once again started neglecting all of the sessions I shot at the beginning of the year. My goal for 2010 was to blog just about every day or at least once a week…yeahhhhhh so obviously that hasn't happened! I've been shooting so many great weddings in the past two months that at this point I'd be showcasing them at this time next NEXT year! Not good! Instead I decided to put together an awesome slideshow that showcases what I shot from the beginning of the year until about the beginning of May. From this point I'll start blogging all the bridals & engagement sessions that led up to the wedding! Then I'll be posting their weddings!

So kick back, grab a cold one & enjoy! I promise I'll make it a goal to try harder to showcase EVERYONE from here on out in their own special post! I need a clone of about 6 of me in the meantime!

Lately when I’m talking with a potential bride via emails the number one question is “what do I get in the Collection?” And then “what if I want an album?” They they always want to know why an album isn’t included in all the Collections…because “so and so photographer” offers it so why don’t I. When I ask what kind of album are they referring to (because in my mind I know EXACTLY which ones they’re thinking of…the cheap little print/bind paperback books or either an album that you slide 4×6s into) they reply “you know, the ones I can put 4×6s in.” Bingo! What did I tell you?! I’m a mind reader!

Then I go on to explain (in non-industry terms) that they are often called “magazine style albums” or “coffee table albums” and that no I do not offer photo albums you can slide 4×6s into or the cheap little books. Sorry, I highly value quality items. If it’s not something I would want to own myself then I won’t offer it just to be offering it. I’ve always had expensive taste so to speak so if it’s not of high quality then forget it…not being conceited…just telling the truth! I often see photographers offering 10×10 albums with 50 pages in a $1000 package which also includes unlimited coverage & a DVD. The albums they are offering are NOT the ones I offer in any shape, way or form. And yes, the ones I offer are expensive. They are an investment just as your wedding photographer should be. Albums to me are priceless. They are an actual tangible item that can be passed down from generation to generation! What better way than to remember your day & be able to display it in a fashionable manner & not hidden in a drawer to never see the light of day! You want it to be something your grandchildren will fight over!

I currently offer two albums…an 8×20 for the bride who wants to take it to the next level & be extraordinary; and a standard 9×12 album…plus with the order of one of these albums first, I do offer separately (2) parent albums in a 6×8. I’ve found that if you start to offer too many options & albums you end up completely overwhelming the client..not good! Keep it simple & they’ll thank you for it later! For this year, I’ve done away with offering a bunch of prints in my Collections. I was finding that most girls didn’t want them anyways…they all just wanted the DVD of images (which is included in every single Collection I offer). I’ve also decided to start doing album pre-designing as well for those on the fence of wanting a book or not. For those who still love & want 4×6 prints, I do offer an item a little bit more modern than a plain ole’ 4×6 album. I offer custom made proof boxes, which will hold 300 4×6s.

All my albums are designed by me in Photoshop. I approach the album design in a clean, classic, timeless kind of approach. I don’t want the book to ever date itself! Therefore you will NEVER see drop shadows, patterned backgrounds, 60 image collage on one page, etc. I find that stuff to personally be tacky. They all start off with a 10 page spread (20 pages total) with the option to add additional pages at an additional price. I pick the images that I feel best tell the story throughout the day & put it together. I come up with the layouts in my head & then with the help of a template system I build the page as I want. I send the final product via email to the client to proof & they can make 2 revisions to it at no additional charge. Once I get final approval it gets uploaded & sent to a fabulous company who does all the print & binding of the pages!

So below we will start with my absolute FAVORITE size album..the 8×20. It opens up from top to bottom and to a full 16×20 when completely open. This album is massive! The cover is a type of aluminum with the couple’s image on the front. I chose to put the couple’s name & wedding date…all optional of course. The binding is a leather in a nice warm color that is textured! I LOVE it!
Disclaimer: I am not a product photographer nor do I strive to be or ever want to be one! The images taken are of the actual album & spreads (pages) laid out. These images do not do these products justice in any way! The albums are gorgeous (& heavy!)!

Next is the custom proof box…again, all designed in Photoshop & off to a company for the actual item! The front has the image, the spine typically has the couple’s name and/or date and the back is usually a design or solid color (one that is taken from the image so it flows together).

And on to the standard size 9×12 album…this album is designed vertically & opens like a normal book. The cover is an acrylic one with a metallic image underneath it. The binding of the spine & back is again a nice, textured leather…in this instance more of a crocodile pattern.

Oops! Just realized I put the bottom image of in the spread above in the pic below! Ignore that! Too much work to fix it & repost! LOL

So I hope you’ve enjoyed looking at a few albums & have a better idea of what they are when I talk about them! Brides, if you haven’t thought of getting one you really should! They are fabulous! Your future grandchildren will thank you later!

So a looooooooooog time ago in a land far far away I started asking some of my favorite people in & outside of my industry if they’d like to be featured on the blog! I’ve been wanting to start a series of “Vendors I Heart!” for quite some time now. This series of blogposts will feature people that have had a key hand in my business, people I work alongside with in the wedding industry, and any fabulous people who make/design awesome stuff that I cannot resist! It’s my way of giving back & recognizing publicly the ones who have sent referrals my way & those who have helped my business out tremendously! Too often clients are given all the credit when in truth the ones on the backend of this industry deserve just as much credit!

Now on to the post!

Meet Kate!

She’s super cute & tiny (like a little pixie!), fun, fabulous & makes kick a$$ earrings…and now rings, necklaces & earring frames! I met Kate through a good friend of mine, Sabrina (the one who took the amazing pic posted above, who has also made her own appearance here!), quite some time back. Then Kate started making these fabulous earrings at a very affordable price! They’re like potato chips “you can’t have just one!” Seriously! Her earrings (my personal fave) are priced between $5ish-$7ish, certain styles may be a little more than others! So there really is no excuse to buy just one pair…ever! Now I have a mini-collection of them!

So in Kate’s words here’s a little bit about her business!

1. Your Business Name, Your Name & Area You’re Based Out Of.
Katie-Kate Earrings, Kate Bannister Ekstrom, Elizabeth City NC

2. I know you’re awesome, so tell everyone else a little about what you do!
I create affordable, unique, trendy earrings. From the very beginning I wanted to create earrings at a price point that would allow women to say “I HAVE to have these earrings” and then buy them…not at a price point that would have women saying “Do I really need these earrings”. I have stuck to this idea and
will not waiver from it.

3. Describe your style in 3 words.
Trendy Fun Simplistic

4. Describe your ideal client!
Any women who wants to look and feel good by adding inexpensive, unique pieces of jewelry to their wardrobe.

5. Who is your dream client?
I would love for Courtney Cox to wear a pair of Katie-Kate Earrings on an episode of “Cougar Town“. She wears the most fabulous jewelry and I would love for her to add Katie-Kate’s to her collection!

6. What sets you apart from the competition?
Price point, one of a kind creations and the accessibility of my product and of me!

7. What got you started in your profession?
My love for fashion/costume jewelry at reasonable prices along with finding an outlet for the creative side of my brain! There’s a lot going on in there…haha…

8. Where or who do you draw your inspiration from?
Style trends and fashionable women

9. Name someone you admire & why?
My Mom! She is the most forgiving, honest, loving person that I will ever meet….and she always told me that I could do anything that I wanted to do if I put the time and effort into it. I heart her!

10. Tell us one random thing about yourself!
I want to be on a reality TV show…Big Brother preferrably

11. What fuels your passion for what you do?
The reaction of my clients when they see my new creations and the sweet cards and letters that I get from them when they get Katie-Kate’s in the mail!

12. What is the hardest part of your job?
Managing my time between a full-time job and earring making. It is a struggle sometimes, but totally worth it. Oh, and also finding materials to create what I see in my head (I told you that there was a lot going on in there!)

13. If you had a million dollars you’d…
I would open and run the most fabulous boutique ever and hire all of my girlfriends!

14. And finally, how can people get a piece of your awesomeness (email, website, phone #, Facebook, Twitter, etc.)?
Cell: 252-622-2737; Etsy store; Facebook (Katie-Kate Earrings)

So everyone go check her out, show her some love & buy some stuff! I promise you will NOT be disappointed!

xoxo
Amy

Here’s my little sister & my brother-in-law! We look nothing alike right?! Everyone says we look like twins..we don’t see it…AT ALL! Lara had been asking me to do some pics for awhile of them to send to Chris’ grandma. Wellllll, you know how it goes being a photographer…too busy, don’t have time to shoot family..yada yada yada! The last time I shot their pics was when I was first starting out testing the waters to see if I even wanted to shoot people & shot her wedding in St. Thomas! She was supposed to have gotten married in the Cayman Islands. Well a little hurricane called Wilma that October of 2005 had other plans for us. We were going on a cruise to the Western Carribean, very late October & hittin’ up Jamaica, Cayman Islands & Mexico…Christmas present to the four of us from my Daddy…we thought all would be well. WRONG! So very wrong! Hurricane Wilma popped up out of nowhere late into the season & headed straight for our leaving port..Miami. We didn’t know until 2 days before getting ready to drive down there that they rerouted our trip at last minute…hence ruining my sister’s wedding plans. But all was well…big sister came to the rescue while she crumbled & stressed about what they were going to do. A reception was already planned for them when the four of us got back.

We found out we were going to Puer-toooooo Ricooooooooo (imagine that in a Spanish voice, very exaggerated…bet you can’t get it out of your head now! :D), St. Maarten (my little personal Heaven on Earth) & St. Thomas (wamp wamp…still too much like USA). So I got on the web & started figuring out the rules & regulations for getting married on each island & how fast it could be done! Puerto Rico…big fat NO…have to have all sorts of crazy tests done (HIV, STDs, rabies…kidding on the last one…although it wouldn’t surprise me), a Spanish translator, & I can’t remember all what else but it was insane. Moving on to St. Maarten…I think they wanted them to have been on the island a minimum of 14 days or so & wouldn’t expedite paperwork. That left St. Thomas…they too wanted you to be on the island a certain number of days. They told us we’d have to come to the courthouse & *see* if they would *maybe* allow the paperwork to be expedited. Sigh…so we hopped on the boat, her with her wedding dress & he with his tux & a prayer in the back pocket.

I had also found them a minister who could legally marry them. He was going to pick us up at 7am that morning when we docked & take us to the courthouse. Throw in major kink right about NOW…we didn’t know when we left St. Maarten the day before & would be traveling back into US territory that’d we’d have to go through customs…we had to be up & in line by 6am to get checked out & hopefully hurry off the boat. We got in line at 5:30am & the line.did.not.move.for.an.hour. OMG…my sister ran out of line, found a phone, paid like $40 for a 3 minute phone call to the preacher to see if he could get us later that day instead. He was a God send! We didn’t get out of customs & off the boat till about 7:30am….absolutely zero time for her to have gotten her hair & makeup done! So off she went to the salon & off I went to explore the island! And they got married later that afternoon (yes the courthouse lady was very nice & expedited the paperwork…cost $100 extra), right before a HUGE rainstorm hit, & now live happily ever after!

And they managed to go trade in her engagement ring/wedding ring they had already bought in the states for a blue diamond engagement ring with diamonds & a diamond studded wedding band…gorgeous! Paid like barely $3000 grand for it…got it appraised when she got back…worth $10,000 in states! I highly suggest buying jewelry over seas! Tax free, duty free! Side note: I was going to buy a diamond encrusted Movado watch while in St. Maarten…best the jewelry store could sell it to me for was $1600. I couldn’t justify spending that amount on a watch back then…so I came home without it. Got Bo’s sister to find it for me (she worked at a jewelry store) when I got back home…$6000 in the States! I kick myself to this day for not getting it!

And by the way…the lady who rode in the bucket cart to the top of the island with me & Bo…you have still said one of the absolute stupidest things I’ve heard yet & I will never forget it! As we were coming back down from the top of the island in one of those rickety bucket carts, the lady beside us proceeds to turn to her husband and ask “Honey, I wonder what they do in the winter time when it snows here with all the hills?” OMG…REALLY, did that REALLY just come out of your mouth…why yes it did! There were only like 5 of us in that bucket cart…I was snickering so loud I embarrassed the hell out of Bo…the lady looked at me like I had lost my mind…she seriously thought it snowed there! Even her husband thought she was nuts!

So fast forward back to 5 years from then to the now… when we got a little bit of snow again one weekend this January I called her the night before & asked if she wanted to do a “once in a lifetime” snow shoot! Cause seriously, around here in our part of NC, you have no idea if you’ll get snow once a year or once in 5 years! It’s a true rarity around here! She agreed & they got up early & came over. So out we went & of course the sun came out & started melting everything. We still managed to get a few wintry shots!

I shot Tracy & Tony about a week after Adrienne & Brian….another cold day. But nowhere near as cold as before! I thought we were going to get rained out. The day started off sunny & then quickly turned very, very cloudy on us. I was super bummed because I love my sunshine! But we knocked it out & I LOVE their images!

We didn’t shoot these as close to Tracy’s due date. She wanted to have plenty of time to get them done in case he were to come early…yes there is a boy in there…and a super cute one at that! Baby P will be making his own appearance on the blog as well! But this was another January shoot! I get cold just thinking about them!

Is she not the cutest thing ever?!? Tracy is a super sweet girl married to a fab guy who didn’t complain once. She had to climb over fallen down trees, briars & walk in tall grass all while 8 months or so pregnant mind you! She got some pretty major scratches on the top of her feet too if I recall correctly. All the while, Tony had to carry my super heavy trunk that we used as a prop! Thanks Tony!

Again…it should be a crime to look this gorgeous pregnant!

Does Adrienne not have the absolute cutest bump?! She had contacted me eons ago about doing some maternity pics for her before baby got here. We cut it very close to her due date. She was due the beginning of February & these were shot at the end of January! Eek! Telling on myself how long it’s been since I’ve blogged images!

Of course the day we decided to shoot these it was COLD AS HELL! Her & Brian were such troopers…which is why I have some of *the* best clients in the world! They’re up for anything, any weather! Notice she has NO COAT on & it was freezing! It took us about 30 minutes before we couldn’t take anymore. My feet, legs & hands were frozen & that rarely happens to me. When she started shaking it was time to call it quits! I told her we didn’t want to go from shooting maternity pics to going straight to a hospital into delivery. If it hadn’t of been windy all would’ve been well.

Baby C was born a couple of weeks later before I took off for sunny Florida for the weekend! I got the pleasure of photographing her at a few days old..heaven!! She’ll make her appearance in her very own blog post so stay tuned!

Without futher adieu…my amazing clients!!
I told her if I could look half as good as she did almost 9 months pregnant then I’d be happy! Not fair to look this good pregnant…& I’ve never had kids!

So it’s been awhile since I last blogged & with good reason. This will probably be one of *the* hardest posts I will ever have to write. A lot of things have happened since my last blogpost showcasing the wonderful Zinsmeister family who bidded on a session with me to benefit Relay for Life. In that post I talked about how my boyfriend’s father was dealing with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After that was posted he was admitted back into a hospital where he remained until he passed on April 17, 2010…exactly one month ago today. Sadly, it wasn’t the cancer so much that took him but rather all the infections that come along with having cancer & having to do chemo. He was a fighter till the end, until the Lord called him home. I know from speaking with Bo that he mentioned before how he had talked with the Lord & that he knew it was his time & he was happy with that. That is the only thing that brings me comfort…that he is home & is no longer in any pain. Never, ever, not once did I think he was not going to make it…EVER! I knew in my heart that he could beat the cancer. I did not anticipate an infection getting out of control like it did. Towards the end I was still confident that he could beat the infection, even when there were a few times when he wanted to give up. But he hung in there for his family because we all wanted him here so desperately, selfishly even.

I didn’t go see him in the hospital…not once. I told Bo to tell him it’s because I’m waiting for him to come back home where I could go visit. I also know that he didn’t want anyone to see him like that…I didn’t want my last memories of him to be of him lying in a hospital bed, helpless. That was not him at all. I don’t regret not going to the hospital because it was more important to me that Bo, his sisters, his mom & his niece & grandparents spend as much time with him as possible. Afterall, you’re only given one set of parents. I also don’t believe in goodbyes…it’s “see you later.” I think I also felt that going was like giving up on him, like saying goodbye & I refused to do it. Granted I told Bo if he ever asked for me to come see him I’d be there in a heartbeat.

He had an amazing service & memorial where many good friends spoke in his honor. He ALWAYS worked way too much, we always felt that way…that he needed to slow down & spend more time with family. He worked, seriously, 7 days a week. He was a Postmaster for many years & most recently was Postmaster in Hertford, NC. He FINALLY retired on October 1, 2009. We found out a month later that he had cancer. He never got to enjoy his retirement or his time off. He never got to go fishing everyday like he had wanted to or have family cookouts with his new grill. But we did learn that he worked hard for his family & was torn between the long hours & not spending enough time with family. He worked those long hours to do good deeds for others…ALWAYS putting someone else’s needs before his own…ALWAYS! Now we know why he always had so many raffle tickets to things, gift baskets he had bought from someone, dinner plates to be eaten…anything to help someone else out. He was also so very proud of his country & served in Vietnam…even getting shot in the back. He is buried in the Vietnam Veteran’s section at West Lawn. He has an awesome Vietnam collection of pics that he & others took while over there. I’ve since scanned them & will have some of them printed & framed & others I will put together a slideshow. Anyone that knows me has more than likely heard me say on more than one occasion that I’ve always felt like I was born in the wrong time period. I should’ve been a hippie love child of the 60s-70s! So finding treasures like those pics makes me super happy! I love Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Creedance…the list goes on & on.

If I’ve learned one lesson from all of this it’s that I work way too much, don’t spend enough time with family, or take enough time for myself. Things I’m working on changing. Life is way too short, people don’t live forever & you can’t take your money with you when you die…so get over it & start living…my new life motto.

This past month has had its ups & downs. Many days I can smile with happiness when I think about him & others I am filled with sadness & disbelief that he is gone. I’ve asked for signs from above from him & believe I’ve received them a few times…each time one of two things have happened…either a helicopter flies over (part of his job in Vietam…helicopter sniper) or one of 2 songs comes on…Elton John’s “Daniel” or James Taylor’s “Fire & Rain.” Mind you I am not a James Taylor fan, sorry James, but these 2 songs have been monumental for me. They were played back to back on the radio one night when I was driving home & had just gotten off the phone with Bo who told me they thought it was time he was going to pass. Ended up it was not his time that night but those 2 songs are with me everywhere!

We’ve celebrated 5 of our birthdays without him so far & one Mother’s Day. Christmas will be the worse. He would fill whichever beloved van he had at the moment with massive amounts of toys for his granddaughter. My fondest memories are putting all her crap together on Christmas Eve for hours!! He loved shopping & buying gifts. I’ll miss all that the most. We’ve also grilled out a few time with his grill & Dallas Cowboy grilling set. The Cowboys have another angel watching over them for next season…& did I mention I absolutely hate sports!

What I miss the most about him is his smile & his laugh & his stupid jokes…which were always pretty damn funny if I say so myself! But he lives forever in my heart & I can say proudly that I know he loved me & treated me as one of his own. I’ve said before that he joked many times that if me & Bo ever broke up that Bo would be out of the family! When I look into my crystal ball for the future, the thing that saddens me the most is that if me & Bo decide to ever have any children, his dad won’t be here to see that. All he ever wanted was another grandchild to spoil. Bo’s niece, Aaryn, was his only one…his other granddaughter was born & went to Heaven 5 days before Aaryn was born. His birthday, Haley’s birthday & Aaryn’s birthday were all 5 days apart.

And during the past few months my clients have been AHH-MAZING! During a time like this you find out who truly cares about you & your loved ones & I have some of the absolute best clients/friends. There were many a shoot where I pushed on because after all, life doesn’t stop for my upcoming brides who need their pics done & are getting married. Not a single bride of mine cared the least bit about their shoot, getting images back in time or rescheduling if need be..not a single one! That speaks volumes & means so much to me more than any of them will ever know! All my brides have been so selfless during this time. And my portrait clients have been the exact same way. Much love & appreciation goes out to all of you!

Also, during this time I had been emailing back & forth with a new client of mine. Her shoot is not until September. In the meantime she had asked me if I would consider doing a family shoot, as in her mom, brother, etc. I don’t typically shoot large family group shots. And during this time she had no idea what was going on in my life. When I told her I didn’t shoot large groups she said that was fine. Then something told me to reconsider. She actually ended up emailing back before I could & explained the situation & asked again if I might would reconsider. Her brother is a cancer survivor, the same type of cancer, & they really didn’t have any family portraits. He also was scheduled to have his routine checkup & tests to see if the cancer was still in remission. It’s a cancer that can come back at any time & they had been close to losing him before. I *knew* that this was a sign from above that I needed to do this shoot. I then emailed her my story & so we became email buddies & have never met. Their family shoot is in July & I can’t wait to finally meet them. Being able to email back & forth with someone who has been in the same situation was great! I know they were put into my life for a reason…whatever that may be. I then had emailed her after he passed to let her know & that I’d like for her to donate the session fee to the American Cancer Society in Bo’s dad’s name. She’s thrilled to do so! And she also emailed me that her brother is still cancer free! Yay!!!

Again, there are many amazing people that have been put into my life for whatever reason & for whatever the reason I am grateful!

So if you ever decide to donate money or time or anything to a good cause…please think about donating it to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. I know Bo told me once during the past few months that his dad was going to start donating money there when he beat his cancer. Knowing how he was & what he went through with chemo, I’m sure it saddened him to think of little children having to go through that same ordeal. I will definitely be donating funds this year to St. Jude’s. Bo & his sisters, mom & niece also recently did a Relay for Life walk in his honor…we got him a torch & of course they decked it out in Dallas Cowboy pics for him! I couldn’t make it to this walk due to being on a shoot but that’s okay as there will be many more walks that we will do!

And with that I will leave you with one of my favorite images I took of him back in 2007. I had the honor of photographing Bo’s sister’s wedding when I was first getting started. These are happy memories because 1. he was so happy that day & 2. everyone remembers he got drunk as a skunk!

You are missed everyday & we will always love you! We wear our lime green ribbons proudly in your honor! I know you’re dancing in Heaven with Haley & have Bubs & Whisper by your side!

xoxo

This post is so long overdue & a long one! So sit back & relax! It contains a topic close to my heart right now as it does with many others…cancer. In today’s world it’s very hard to find someone whose life hasn’t been touched by cancer in some shape, way or form. We pretty much all know someone who has had it or someone who has it. I believe all things happen for a reason & we’re all connected to people in our lives for some greater reason unbeknownst to us..not just by coincidence. One of those things being that about a year ago I was surfing the net, reading some blogs & stumbled across Scarlett Lillian’s blog…who is a phenomenal photographer whose work I love! But her blog also contained something else. I have no clue how I even got to her blog but I saw the post about her dad’s passing & just couldn’t stop reading. Then from there somewhere on her blog it was connected to her mother’s story of her bout with cancer. Long story short I was balling my eyes out when I was done reading & have followed her work & her life journey ever since. For those who follow my blog, you all know that I had the amazing opportunity to attend her first ever group workshop! When she posted it I really wanted to sign up but kept talking myself out of it. I did that for almost 3 weeks. But there was just this nagging voice in my head that said “do it, sign up & go…you have nothing to lose & so much to gain.” So for once I followed my instincts, signed up & had the best time! Scarlett is an amazing photographer & mentor! Her spirituality is so infectious & she has a way of making you feel so great about yourself & that you CAN do anything! And man can she make a room full of girls cry like babies! I highly highly suggest that if she ever offers another one in the future that you sign up immediately! You’ll thank yourself later!

So what does this have to do about anything? Awhile back Scarlett posted she was going to run a marathon. She was going to make up a t-shirt with names on it for people she could run for & if you wanted someone’s name on it then all you had to do was post it. I added two names…my boyfriend’s dad & a friend who passed about 5 years ago. You see, we, my boyfriend & I, just found out about 4 months ago that his dad has cancer. He’s currently fighting his battle right now with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma & is doing good…one day at a time. I’ve been with my boyfriend for 15 years this year so his dad is like a second dad to me & this very much affects me. He’s always joked that if me & Bo ever split up…Bo’s out of the family! So true to her word Scarlett got the t-shirt made & posted it on her blog & on the second column sat their names…Daniel & Chris. After seeing that, Scarlett made me cry yet again! Only truly selfless people do things like this for others. And true to her word, Scarlett ran & FINISHED her first marathon a few weeks back! Woo-hoo! She didn’t start off with no baby half marathon or anything like that…she started off with the “go big or go home” marathon…26 miles! Ahhh-mazing! I would’ve passed out at mile 1 & asked to be driven back to the finish line! Please please please go to her blog & read the story & watch the video! Yes, she even made a video while running! Grab a tissue while you’re at it…cause dang it…she’ll make you cry whether you want to or not!

So what is all this leading up to? A rad family session of course! I’ve donated a few free sessions, including a disc of all the images, to Relay for Life auctions. It’s very important for me to give back! I always donated before Bo’s dad got cancer & I’ll always continue to donate in hopes for a cure! The family who bid on my session are current clients. They can book me at any time, regular price, & be done. But this amazing family bid on my session & won, which I’m so pleased to say went for much higher than what the actual price value was…all for a great cause! These were meant to have been taken outside but Mother Nature had other plans of course…as she always seems to have for me lately! It was freezing outside that day & the baby was getting over being sick & one of the oldest daughters was under the weather. So for everyone’s sake we stayed in & shot inside…which is very outside the norm for me. I will only do it if the family has a room that is super bright with a ton of natural light! Ordinarily I would reschedule with everyone feeling under the weather but we had to do these pics that day because the two oldest daughters were in town visiting & would be leaving soon after. I LOVE this family! They are so chill, laid back, easy going & let me do my thing…makes my job so much easier! No forced poses with this family or making the baby sit in one place & smile!

My faves from the day! Can’t wait till it warms up because I have another session with the little one!

Thank you Zinsmeister family soooo much for the fun session & for donating to a great cause!

This post is dedicated to Bo’s dad who is fighting his battle, to Scarlett’s mom who fought her battle, to Scarlett’s dad who lost his battle but will never be forgotten, to Chris who lost his battle & will never be forgotten & to the many others who are fighting their battles. So please pray for a cure & donate to a good cause!

Happy Hump Day! So there are tons & tons of articles on why you should hire a professional photographer…I’m speaking strictly of weddings in this instance…and every one of those articles suggest different things. But I wanted to give my prospective clients my view on it…which some may think is either a really good idea or a really bad one. I think it’s a good one because if I can get just *one* future bride to stop and think before she hires a photographer…then this post was a success to me.

What sparked this post is the all the recent wedding inquiries I’ve been receiving. Ninety-five percent of the girls inquiring do not even introduce themselves or ask if I even have their date available. They jump straight to the question of “how much will my wedding pictures be?” That’s it, nothing else. Granted a few do start off with “I love your work & the quality…” but then it goes off on a tangent of “but I need you to be really cheap.” I’m sorry, what?!?

That makes me sad girls because as a photographer who is potentially going to be shooting one of the biggest days of your life…I want to know more about YOU! You’ve put a lot of time & effort into planning your wedding & I would LOVE to hear more about it! I LOVE my brides & become great friends with them as we go through the wedding process together from shooting their engagements, then their bridals, the wedding & sometimes their “trash the dress” sessions! Some of my brides plan up to a year in advance…that’s a whole year I get to know them better! Which is a great thing!

YES, there will always be someone cheaper than myself & always someone better than myself. I pride myself on my quality of work, my ability to produce images you’ll love. I always tell my clients if it’s not a product I would own myself or hang on my own wall…I wouldn’t sell it to you. I have high expectations of my own self & always hold myself accountable! With today’s technology almost everyone I know (non-photographers) has an entry level DSLR. Thus making it very easy for someone to pick up a camera and call themselves a “wedding photographer.”

Your decision on hiring a photographer should not be based solely on price & who can do it the cheapest. I’m a firm believer “you get what you pay for.” When you email potential photogs you need to be asking them a ton of questions! If they can’t or refuse to answer you back, then maybe it’s a sign to look elsewhere.

I LOVE when a girl emails with a list of questions, or calls with her list in hand…you can never ask too many questions! Your wedding photography is an *INVESTMENT* & should be treated as such by doing your research! Yes, wedding photography is expensive. If it’s a deal that’s too good to be true, then it typically is.

So girls here’s some DO’s & DON’T’s to think about when contacting (or hiring) a photographer who may end up shooting your wedding!

DO:
Introduce yourself…at least say “Hi!” (if contacting via email)
If you have a budget…let em’ know.
Give a few details about location of wedding and reception…or at least one you have in mind if you haven’t booked one yet.
Check out the photographer’s work online…if it’s not enough & price list fits your budget…request a meeting to see more samples.
Ask questions about equipment, time it takes to edit, products, travel fees, how long they’ve been in business, how often they shoot, etc. If you’re booking a photog for your wedding who advertises “wedding photography”…yet they don’t have any wedding images to show…don’t you want to know why?
Meet a potential photographer you’re seriously interested in to see if you even get along. You won’t be comfortable taking pics all day if you can’t be comfortable around your photographer.
Ask any & all questions BEFORE you sign a contract.
Keep in mind a photographer does not *have to* shoot your wedding just because you want em’…they choose to.

DON’T:
Hop around from site to site and just “price shop.” Check out the quality of work first. The images should catch your eye & make you want to see more. If the images don’t do that for you then why inquire about their pricing?
Immediately ask for a discount. Yes, we all know the economy is bad…but it’s like that for EVERYONE!
Assume anything is “included” or “free”…always ask. If anything differs from original package…get it in writing.
Have you mom/sister/aunt inquire & set everything up for you…I’m shooting YOUR wedding that day…not theirs. It’s important you have a say so. Feel free to bring em’ to a meeting for support…but I want to hear about your day from YOU.
Name other photogs who will shoot for less & ask “So what are you going to do for me if I hire you instead?” Ummm…nothing…feel free to hire the other photographer.
Say “I’ll get back to you…” and then never do. I know it’s hard sometimes but follow up whenever you can…even if it’s to say you’ve decided on someone else. It doesn’t hurt my feelings…promise!

Disclaimer: These are not written in stone by any means. They are merely my suggestions based on requests/questions I receive on a regular basis. The bottom line is “do your research.”

At the end of the day when it’s all over with & everyone’s gone their separate ways…one of the most important things left besides the marriage itself are the images. Don’t trust that task with just anyone!

To my current 2010 brides…I cannot wait to shoot your weddings! To my future, prospective brides…I can’t wait to hear more about YOU & YOUR DAY!

xoxo

A HUGE “thanks” also goes out to her husband, Logan, for his infinite patience! He was the trash bag carrier, shoe changer, driver, etc. for us! Love it when husbands are supportive of their wives! I’m sure he won’t be so patient when it comes time for the swamp shoot! He can then play snake wrangler for the day!

And be sure to check out Lydia Shannon & her all her wisdom…& her super cute family & kid portraits!

xoxo
